1. Avoid any caffeinated beverages/foods because these may aggravate mania.

2. Report any episodes of persistent diarrhea; may indicate need for supplemental fluids or salt.

3. Maintain a constant level of salt intake to avoid fluctuations in lithium activity. Weight gain and edema may be related to sodium retention; report if excessive.

4. Drink 10-12 glasses of water each day; avoid dehydration (e.g., vigorous exercise, sunbathing, sauna) to prevent increased concentrations of lithium in urine.

5. Carry name and telephone number of persons to contact if needed or if family members note behavioral changes or physical changes contrary to expectations. Carry ID, noting diagnosis and prescribed meds.
