Corticosteroids

The dominant effect of corticosteroids is anti-inflammatory - reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines and adhesion molecules, and reducing the trafficking of inflammatory cells. At high doses, they may induce apoptosis in immune cells. Their effects are often transient. Further, frequent use of corticosteroids is associated with long-term adverse effects, such as osteoporosis, and their use has to be carefully managed. On the other hand, individual pulses of corticosteroids are relatively free from adverse effects.
