Current Treatment

None of the currently available drugs used for the treatment of schizophrenia can be considered cures, both because they have limited efficacy and because continuous therapy is needed. While representing major advances in positive symptom control, current drugs leave many patients with significant residual symptom burden, poor quality of life, lifelong functional impairment, and often undesirable side effects. Limited or noncompliance with treatment is very common because of limited efficacy and intolerable side effects.
