Osteocytes

Osteocytes represent the most mature stage of the osteoblastic line, as they are derived from osteoblasts that have become embedded in bone; they communicate with each other and with surface osteoblasts or lining cells by forming extensive networks of cell processes, which lie in canaliculi in the matrix.6 This network of osteocytes provides the cellular structure that allows the detection of bone microdamage and enables bone as an organ to determine local needs for bone augmentation or reduction in response to mechanical demands.
