Other therapies for arrhythmias include cardiac surgery for the correction of conditions causing arrhythmias. The Maze technique involves surgical incisions across the atria or around the pulmonary veins to prevent atrial tachyarrhythmias.

During anesthesia and surgery, as well as in emergency situations, imbalances in autonomic nerve activity, blood gases, and electrolyte can all cause arrhythmias, as can hypo- and hyperkalemia in outpatients. The correction of such arrhythmogenic abnormalities, by drugs or electrolytes, can rapidly correct these arrhythmias.
