The Artificial Pancreas

The development of a 'closed-loop' insulin delivery system (artificial pancreas) has been intensively pursued for more than two decades. In the interval, insulin pump delivery systems have been improved greatly and reduced dramatically is size. Sophisticated delivery algorithms and options for delivery of insulin (and even other hormones such as glucagon) directly into the portal circulation have been developed. The lack of a sensing system that is implantable, accurate, and stable for a minimum of 6-12 months continues to be the limiting barrier to this approach. While success is plausible, it appears that such a system will not be available for clinical use in the near future.

Diabetes 2

Diabetes is a disease that affects the way your body uses food. Normally, your body converts sugars, starches and other foods into a form of sugar called glucose. Your body uses glucose for fuel. The cells receive the glucose through the bloodstream. They then use insulin a hormone made by the pancreas to absorb the glucose, convert it into energy, and either use it or store it for later use.
