The Ninds Anticonvulsant Screening Program

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) Anticonvulsant Screening Program (ASP) is a US government-sponsored program initiated over 30 years ago, to identify NCEs for the treatment of epilepsy.27 Some 25 000 NCEs from nearly 400 partnerships, many with pharmaceutical companies, have been evaluated for their potential as AEDs in animal models. Five of these have become new AEDs approved for use in the USA. In addition to establishing efficacy in a variety of animal models of epilepsy, the ASP also measures acute toxicity in terms of muscle tone, rotarod performance, tolerance and subchronic effects on liver function.27
