Unmet Medical Need

All the acute neurological disorders discussed above still represent either largely or completely unmet medical needs. Experimental studies have revealed various targets for neuroprotective therapeutic intervention, and various prototype compounds have been shown to be effective in models of stroke, SAH, TBI, and SCI, supporting the feasibility of achieving successful pharmacological neuroprotection and improved recovery and survival in stroke, TBI, and SCI patients. However, a reasonably convincing demonstration of protective efficacy in the context of clinical trials has for the most part been limited to the development of thrombolytic agents for thromboembolic stroke, the calcium channel blocker nimodipine and the LP inhibitor tirilazad for aneurysmal SAH, and the use of high-dose MP for SCI.
