Michel-Saveur Maira did his PhD in molecular and cellular biology in the laboratory of Dr B Wasylyk (IGBMC, ULP, Strasbourg, France). After a first postdoctoral post in the Research and Development group of Rhone-Poulenc-Rorer (CRVA, Paris, France), he joined the group of Dr B Hemmings at the Friedrich Miescher Institute (FMI, Basel, Switzerland), sponsored by a postdoctoral EMBO fellowship. Since 2001, when he joined Novartis Pharma (NIBR Oncology, Basel, Switzerland) as a laboratory head, his work has mostly focused on targeted therapy drug discovery, most notably against signaling cascade kinases.

Mark A Pearson investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying the synergistic interaction of stem cell factor (SCF) and other cytokines in primitive hematopoietic progenitors in the laboratory of Dr Claire Heyworth Paterson Institute Manchester. After taking his PhD in the Paterson Institute of Cancer Research, Manchester University, he moved to the laboratory of Prof Pier Guiseppe Pelicci, European Institute of Oncology, Milan, assessing the role of the promyeloytic leukemia (PML) protein in the pathophysiology of acute promyelocytic leukemia, in particular the effect of the fusion protein PML-RAR-alpha on regulation of the tumor suppressor p53 by PML. Dr Pearson joined Novartis Oncology in February 2002.

Doriano Fabbro, PhD, is currently Head of the Kinase Biology of the Expertise platform kinases (EPK) at Novartis Institute of Biomedical Research (NIBR). Dr Fabbro's career includes 12 years as Group Leader in the Molecular Tumor Biology Unit of the University of Basel working mainly on the mechanisms of activation of PKC as well as on

prognostic markers for breast cancer; in 1985 he started a collaboration with Prof Alex Matter (Ciba-Geigy) on PKC inhibitors which subsequently led to the successful discovery of Gleevec. In 1991, Dr Fabbro joined the Pharmaceuticals Research of Ciba-Geigy Basel first as a Group Leader and Indication Area Head in Oncology and then as Unit Head in Novartis Oncology Research (after the merger of Ciba-Geigy with Sandoz to form Novartis) where he was member of the integration team oncology research. In this role he was responsible for the drug discovery efforts on ATP-dependent enzymes. More recently, Dr Fabbro has become Head of the EPK in NIBR. Over the year he has contributed significantly to the discovery and development of various protein kinase inhibitors for the treatment of cancer including among others Gleevec, PKC412, AEE788, AEW541, PTK787, and RAD001. Dr Fabbro is a member of numerous professional societies and several journal editorial boards as well as author of over 170 publications and numerous patents in the areas of protein kinase regulation, structure, screening, and drug discover.

Carlos Garcia-Echeverrcia earned his PhD degree in organic chemistry at the University of Barcelona under the supervision of Dr Fernando Albericio and Dr Miquel Pons. After a three-year postdoctoral stay at the University of Madison-Wisconsin with Prof Daniel Rich, he joined the Exploratory Research Unit of Ciba-Geigy (now Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research) in 1993. Since his incorporation at the Oncology Research Group in 1995, he has been the medicinal chemistry sponsor and team head of different programs linked to tumor cell growth control and apoptosis. More recently, he has become Head of Oncology Research in Basel. His research activities have been mainly focused on the identification and development of antagonists of intramolecular protein-protein interactions inhibitors of protein kinases and proteolytic enzymes. He is an inventor on 20 patents (issued or pending), and has published 7 book chapters and over 100 articles and review papers.
