Eye movements

Four eye movement systems determine movements of the eyes at different speeds and in different systems: The smooth pursuit system, which allows the slow tracking of a moving object. The saccadic system, which allows fast conjugate eye movements that change the optical axis of the eye from one point of fixation to another with maximal speed.

The vestibular system, which allows eye movements that compensate for head movements.

The vergence system, which allows co-ordinated movement of the two eyes on an approaching or retreating object. This is achieved by changing the visual axes of the eyes relative to each other.

Nystagmus can be described as a rhythmic alteration between saccadic movements and slow pursuit movements.
