Features of synaptic transmission in the CNS neurontoneuron

There is poly-synaptic input into neurons; Synapses can be excitatory or inhibitory;

Single presynaptic action potentials lead to small depolarisation of the post-synaptic cell;

Synaptic potentials undergo spatial (spatially distinct simultaneous inputs on a single postsynaptic cell) or temporal (series of sequential action potentials) summation to produce threshold depolarisation. This differs from synaptic transmission at the neuromuscular junction (neuron-to-muscle), which has the following characteristics: Excitatory synaptic transmission;

A one-to-one synapse, with one action potential in the input cell leading to one action potential in the output cell; A single presynaptic action potential triggers a postsynaptic action potential.
