Adenosine s'-triphosphate is needed for both contraction and relaxation of muscle:

Hydrolysis of APT provides energy for movement of cross-bridges between actin and myosin, so that these filaments slide upon each other, bringing the Z lines together and shortening the sarcomere.

Adenosine s'-triphosphate is needed for breakdown of the low-energy actin-myosin complex or rigor complex. Occupation by APT of the vacant site on the myosin head triggers detachment of myosin from actin.

Adenosine s'-triphosphate is used for pumping Ca2 + back into the sarcoplas-mic reticulum, promoting muscle relaxation.
