Synaptic fatigue: with repetitive stimulation of the presynaptic neuron at a rapid rate there is progressive decrease in the number of impulses from the post-synaptic neuron. This is due to exhaustion of neurotransmitter stores in synaptic knobs and progressive inactivation of postsynaptic receptors. Post-tetanic facilitation: increased excitability of the postsynaptic neuron that follows repetitive stimulation of an excitatory synapse, following on a period of synaptic delay. This is due to accumulation of Ca2 + in the presynaptic terminals. Synaptic delay: minimum time required for transmission across one synapse (0.5 ms).
