Other proximal tubular reabsorption functions

These relate to:

Water: by osmosis, down the osmotic gradient created by solute reabsorption.

Glucose: carrier-mediated co-transport with sodium across the apical membrane, involving the glucose transporters Na +-dependent glucose transporter (SLGT)-1 and SLGT-2. Thereafter, facilitated diffusion across the basolateral membrane is mediated by the high affinity GLUT-2 transporter.

Amino acids: seven specific transport systems, including those for neutral, dibasic, dicarboxylic, immunoglycine and beta amino acids.

Proteins: alpha 1-microglobulin; beta 2-microglobulin; retinal-binding protein.
