Parietal lobes

Functional areas

The somatic sensory cortex: postcentral gyrus: areas 3,1,2: in the banks of the calcarine sulcus. This region receives somato-sensory pathways from the thalamus that mediate skin sensation and the discriminative senses (such as position sense, stereognosis). Somatic sensory input is integrated with visual and auditory input in the region.

Superior parietal lobule: areas 5, 7: the somato-sensory association area.

Supramarginal gyrus: area 40: inferior parietal lobule.

Angular gyrus: area 39: inferior parietal lobule.

Parietal operculum of postcentral gyrus: area 43: taste.
