A reflex is a stereotyped specific involuntary response to an adequate sensory stimulus. The pathway for a reflex includes an afferent (sensory) signal that evokes an efferent (motor) response.
The reflex arc is composed of five components: A peripheral receptor (sensory organ);
An afferent or sensory limb, from the receptor to the spinal cord or brain e stem; X
Integrative centre: one or more inter-nuncial neurons which link the afferent and s efferent limbs;
The efferent or motor limb;
A terminal effector organ (muscle or glands).
