The bronchial circulation

This is a parallel circulation with the following functions: Supplies the bronchial wall, from the carina down to respiratory bronchioles, with oxygenated blood; Supplies the acinus if the pulmonary blood flow is interrupted; Conditioning of inspired air, by providing water for humidification; Clearance of locally produced mediators. It is of systemic origin, arising from the thoracic aorta. The bronchial blood flow is around 40 ml/min, approximately 1% of pulmonary arterial flow.
