Types of postsynaptic potentials in the CNS

Ionotropic: direct binding of transmitter molecule(s) with a receptor-channel complex, with opening of either excitatory or inhibitory ion channels. Ionotropic glutamate receptors are divided into two broad classes based on sensitivity to the agonist NMDA: NMDA-receptors and non-NMDA receptors. Metabotropic: indirect effect of transmitter molecule(s) binding with a receptor via stimulation of second messengers. Most act through protein phosphoryla-tion, regulated by G-proteins.

Genotropic: a specific compound translocated into the nucleus activates ribonucleic acid (RNA) polymerase activity.
