Seldinger described the needle-wire catheter technique in 1953 and signaled the beginning of a new era in vascular and endovascular therapy. Parodi and Palmaz performed the first endovascular repair of an infrarenal AAA in 1991. Minimally invasive surgical techniques have potential applications in a substantial part of the population with vascular disease. An increasing aged population with significant comorbidities, make endovascular approaches appealing. Elective open repair remains a relatively safe procedure with mortality from 0-4%; however avoidance of a large abdominal operation and the associated complications would be advantageous.
