Patients with familial adenomatous polypo-sis who took sulindac had significant reductions of the number and size of their polyps compared to controls. New directed agents against COX-2 have shown more effect and may be important in prevention. Case controlled studies show a definite reduction in the risk of colon cancer.

Gene therapy with delivery of p53 to tumor cells has been seen in phase 1 and II trials. To this point the results have been less than promising. As delivery techniques improve so too will this form of therapy.
