With laparoscopy there is a significant capital investment.

This coupled with longer operating times and disposable instruments increases the costs of a procedure dramatically.

These costs however, can be offset by a decreased length of stay, shorter convalescent period, and a more rapid return to work.

This has been demonstrated in laparoscopic cholecystectomy, fundoplication, splenectomy and adrenalectomy.

Less cost benefit is seen with inguinal herniorrhaphy since this is already an outpatient procedure.
