Flexible Sigmoidoscopy

Flexible sigmoidoscopy is preferred over colonoscopy because it can be done without sedation. It is preferred over rigid sigmoidoscopy because it provides a working channel. Indications include evaluation of some forms of colitis that affect the distal colon, such as ischemic, actinic, granulomatous, and ulcerative. Some still recommend this for cancer surveillance, although this has in most areas been replaced by the flexible colonoscope secondary to its ability to survey the entire colon in one visit and discover more proximal lesions.
