Genetic Factors

Genetics plays a significant role in lung cancer. As with most cancer this is related to over or under expression of certain genes or loss of genotype. Lung cancers that are aneuploid have a 35% 5 year survival compared to a 61% survival if diploid. Loss of the 3p of chromosome 3 is also associated with a decreased survival and is found in 50-60% of NCSLC. Additional genetic factors are shown in Table 19.3. Many of these are potential targets for gene therapy with current Phase III trials ongoing.
