Hormones Secreted by the Posterior Pituitary Gland

Antidiuretic Hormone (ADH, Vasopressin)

ADH is a 9 amino acid hormone synthesized and released in response to rise in plasma osmolality above 285 mOsm or a decrease in circulating blood volume by 5% or more. It stimulates sodium and chloride reabsorption in the thick ascending loop of Henle and enhances permeability to water in the collecting ducts of the renal medulla, decreasing water loss in urine

Oxytocin

Oxytocin is a 9 amino acid hormone secreted in response to distention of the vagina or uterus or by sucking of the nipples. It stimulates uterine contraction during labor and milk ejection by myoepithelial cells of the mammary ducts during lactation.
