Intestinal Duplications

These are cystic masses which often have a common wall with the small intestine, usually the ileum. May be asymptomatic, or may present as an abdominal mass, or as bleeding or obstruction. Diagnosis is confirmed with technetium pertechnetate scan. Type of surgical treatment pursued depends upon the length of intestine which is involved with the cyst. If it is short, resection of the cyst and its associated bowel with reanastomosis is performed. If the involved segment of bowel is long, the mucosa of the duplication should be stripped, allowing the cyst to collapse, or stapling of the common wall may be effective.
