Off Pump Coronary Artery Bypass OPCAB

Off-pump surgery is a technique that allows the surgeon to perform a bypass procedure without the use of CPB. Consequently, patients do not experience the global inflammatory response caused by CPB, which disrupts the body's physiologic balance. OPCAB procedure utilizes a traditional sternotomy. The greatest advance in OPCAB came with the introduction of regional mechanical stabilisers such as the CardioThoracic Systems Ultima device and the Utrecht Octopus in the mid 1990s. These devices consistently reduced the motion of the target area facilitating the anastomosis.
