Other Hemostatic Agents

There are many other agents available to control minor bleeding.

Surgicel®. This is oxidized cellulose that reacts with blood to form a clot. It will absorb in 2-4 weeks. Surgicel® also has minimal bactericidal effect but delays wound healing.

Gelfoam®. This acts to absorb and promote imitation of coagulation. It is typically combined with thrombin.

Avitene®. This is a microcrystalline collagen that adheres to platelets to stimulate clotting.
