Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) is defined as a clinical response arising from a nonspecific insult including > 2 of the following:

• WBC > 12000/mm2 or < 4000/mm2 or > 10% immature neutrophils


Includes the above criteria with the addition of a presumed or identified source of infection.

Severe sepsis included a one sign of organ dysfunction (Fig. 7.1).
