thoracotomy and resection. A patient with a preoperative FEV1 or FVC of > 30% usually can tolerate resection. A postoperative FEV1 of > 800 mL is also considered sufficient for resection. If a patient does not meet the criteria then a split lung perfusion study can be performed to determine the contribution of the involved segment of lung to be resected to the overall pulmonary function. Arterial blood gases should be done and have a PaO2 > 55 and a PaCO2 < 50. The diffusion capacity of carbon monoxide (DLCO) is also a useful measure of pulmonary function used preopera-tively to predict morbidity.
