Upper endoscopy is used for the evaluation of the esophagus, stomach, duodenal bulb and first portion of the duodenum. This is performed with a flexible scope with conscious sedation. It allows you to exclude other disease, document the presence of esophageal injury, and to score the degree of injury using one of the scoring systems available. In Barrett's esophagus, the most advanced form of this disease, biopsies should be performed to confirm metaplasia and exclude dysplasia. This can be done using an instrumentation port and biopsy forceps.
