Tissue Sealant

Application in pancreatic surgery has shown a 25% decrease in the incidence of fistula formation when applied to the pancreatic stump intraoperatively. Other studies have not been as optimistic and have not found a significant difference found between treatment groups.2

Bronchopleural fistula is a common complication following pulmonary resection. Fibrin sealant has been shown to decrease the incidence of pneumothorax following percutaneous lung biopsy. Current animal studies have shown some benefit of the sealant in reducing pulmonary air leaks.2
