Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a disorder of hematopoietic stem cells accounting for 15% of adult leukemias. The median age at presentation is between 50 and 60 years. Chronic myeloid leukemia has a consistent annual incidence of about 1 per 100,000 people with no known geographic variation. The majority of patients present in the chronic phase with relatively stable disease. Unpredictably, the disease eventually transforms into accelerated and blastic phases, becoming more resistant to treatment. The final and fatal blastic phase has features of an acute leukemia. Chronic myeloid leukemia was one of the first diseases in which a specific chromosomal abnormality was identified, a Philadelphia (Ph0) chromosome resulting from the t(9;22)(q34;q11) chromosomal translocation (1-4).
