Early lesions are characterized by a moderately dense perivascular and interstitial infiltrate composed mainly of medium-sized histiocytes with oval or irregular nuclei and eosinophilic, granular cytoplasm. As the lesions evolve, circumscribed infiltrates surrounded by an epidermal collarette at the margins are present (Fig. 2). In addition, Touton cells and foamy cells appear and increase in numbers (Fig. 3). The infiltrate acquires a diffuse or large nodular, sheet-like appearance. Admixture of small lymphocytes and eosinophils is found. Fibrosis signals the regression of the lesions.
