♦ If there is evidence of a different size of effect in different subgroups in the main outcome measure, such as survival, consider other internal evidence from the trial by examining secondary outcome measures, such as recurrence.

♦ If there is an indication of a different size of effect in different subgroups, then consider whether there is evidence external to the trial, for example from other similar trials, that support (or contradict) this result. A systematic review (see Chapter 11) may help in doing this.
