The AXIS colorectal cancer trial described earlier included a comparison of surgery alone versus surgery followed by portal vein infusion of fluorouracil. A survival rate of 50 per cent at five years after surgery was anticipated in the control group, and a 5 per cent increase in survival through the addition of fluorouracil was the targeted difference.
