Conclusion

The established cancer trials centre occupies a crucial scientific and organizational position, facilitating not only the planning, conduct and reporting of individual trials but also the strategic planning of long-term programmes of research nationally and internationally. There are many such groups throughout the world. There is, however, much scope for closer collaboration between them to achieve rapid intakes into large trials with a higher level of international strategic planning. Such enhanced collaboration will lead to more rapid improvements in treatment to the benefit of patients with cancer worldwide.
