Daytoday conduct of the trial and data management

Because obtaining complete and reliable data is crucial to the successful completion of a trial, compliance in the provision of data by centres and accuracy of data entry need to be monitored. If centres send forms to the trial coordinators as soon as they have been completed, and if data management staff conversant with the trial check the information on the forms on arrival, and the data are then entered onto the trial database and subjected to checks, this may be sufficient as a routine method of monitoring for most trials. It is likely, however, that at least for some trials, further monitoring and checking will be desirable. It is, of course, important to ensure that the local centre is contacted about missing or inconsistent data.
