Introduction

In this chapter, we describe the launching and conduct of a trial. For a trial to succeed, all those involved should promote and publicize it and do everything they can to maintain impetus and enthusiasm. We consider all aspects of conducting the trial on a day-to-day basis, paying particular attention to the membership, roles and methods of functioning of the committees responsible for independent data monitoring and supervision, and raise issues concerning computing and information technology, data protection, and the prevention of research misconduct.
