Patient advocacy groups include general groups which have the aims of involving consumers in the prioritization and commissioning of research and development in all areas of medicine, and of ensuring that the results of research are appropriately disseminated. The major cancer charities play an invaluable role in providing information on all aspects of cancers and their management through booklets, telephone conversations, personal contact and web sites. There is also a wide variety of organizations concerned with particular types of cancer. Box 12.4 indicates the roles of patient advocacy groups that are relevant to cancer trials.
