Meibomian cyst


Granuloma of either meibomian gland or Zeis gland of the eyelid


Lipid-breakdown products from retained glandular secretions resulting in granulation tissue and inflammation; bacterial enzyme actions possibly part of the process

Clinical manifestation

Firm, red papule of the lid; associated with seborrheic dermatitis, chronic blepharitis, and rosacea

Differential diagnosis

Hordeolum; sebaceous neoplasm; orbital cellulitis; marginal cyst; mucocele; hydro-cystoma; oncocytoma


Medical therapy: moist heat applied twice daily for 15-30 minutes Surgical therapy: incision and drainage of fluctuant lesions; drainage via a transcon-junctival incision and curettage
