Underlying cause of eosinophil overproduction not well understood; cytokine-mediated eosinophils survive in the tissues for longer periods of time than normal, thus increasing the amount of tissue damage; cells contain granules that store toxic cationic proteins, the primary mediators of tissue injury; toxins: major basic protein, eosinophil peroxidase, eosinophil-derived neurotoxin, and eosinophil cationic protein; eosinophils also release specific cytokines that recruit additional eosi-nophils
