The management of cholesteatoma remains controversial. The major issues are whether to leave the CWU and whether to stage the procedure. At the House Ear Clinic, we prefer the CWU technique in most cases. This often requires a staged procedure in extensive cholesteatoma and badly diseased ears. We do not hesitate to do a CWD procedure when indicated.

In either case, a safe and dry ear is achieved in more than 90% of patients. Hearing improvement can be achieved in most, regardless of the severity of the disease, but this will often require a second-stage procedure.
