Many teenagers avoid having sexual intercourse as a way to "abstain" from having sex. Instead, they are increasingly engaging in non-intercourse sexual activities such as oral sex, which they think are safe and risk-free. They don't realize that they can contract many STDs—including chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, genital warts, and HIV— through oral sex. Safer oral sex is just as important as safer vaginal or anal sex. Always use a non-lubricated latex condom for oral sex. For oral sex on a woman, cover the vagina with a non-lubricated latex condom that has been cut open, a piece of plastic wrap, or a dental dam (a small sheet of latex that you can buy in drugstores).
