This novel group of therapeutics comprises proteins that are either purified from natural sources or produced as recombinant or synthetic proteins, and it reflects the recent progress of medical biotechnology and molecular biology. Monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, and cytokines can be allotted to this group (Gescuk and Davis 2002, Isenberg and Leckie 2002, Watts 2000). Many of these therapeutics are only just beginning to be introduced into the treatment of LE. The response of CLE to these agents has not been specifically addressed to date, apart from interferons, which have been extensively used in the past.
