Extracutaneous Disease

Childhood-onset SLE has often been described as more severe than adult-onset disease, with a relatively high likelihood of nephritis (Font et al. 1998, Vlachoyianno-poulos et al. 1993). Studies of childhood-onset SLE are frequently limited by a small number of subjects and, often, a lack of distinction between prepubertal and postpu-bertal SLE. Effects of the disease and its treatment on growth and on emotional and intellectual development may be especially important considerations in the child and adolescent age groups.
