Ultraviolet Radiation Induces Apoptosis

SCLE and DLE are characterized by increased numbers of apoptotic cells in lesional skin (Baima and Sticherling 2001, Pablos et al. 1999). Both UVA (320-400 nm) and UVB (290-320 nm) are potent inducers of apoptosis in the epidermis, as evidenced by the presence of the sunburned cell (SBC) (morphologically distinguished by the presence of pyknotic nuclei and a shrunken and eosinophilic cytoplasm) or by DNA fragmentation detection assays (Murphy et al. 2001). Although the final product is similar, the mechanism and timeframe related to apoptosis induction differ between UVA and UVB (Godar 1999, Nghiem et al. 2002).
