Intussusception is not an uncommon phenomenon in children and is one of the commoner causes of the acute abdomen between six months and five years of age. The vast majority of intussusceptions arise in the ileum and are either ileocolic or ileo-ileocolic. They are thought to occur because of hyperplasia of the lymphoid tissue in the ileum, possibly as a result of a viral infection [1, 2].

There are other types of intussusceptions that may relate to pathologic lead points [3], gastro-jejunostomy tubes or those intussusceptions that are seen in the postoperative period. These will be discussed separately at the end of this chapter.

The purpose of this chapter is to provide a summary of the diagnostic approaches and management of the various types of intussusception in children. For an in-depth review of the current literature on this subject the reader is referred to references 1-3.
