Postoperative Intussusception

Intussusception may occur as a complication in less than 1% of laparotomies. The diagnosis is often not considered because it is so uncommon. Sonographic evaluation of any abdomen in the first few weeks following a la-parotomy should include a search for a postoperative intussusception. These are usually more difficult to diagnose on sonography than the usual ileocolic intussusceptions, as they are small bowel intussusceptions and are usually surrounded by large, dilated loops of obstructed bowel. They usually require surgical reduction.
