Hepatitis can be caused by bacteria, by hepatotoxic agents (drugs, alcohol, industrial chemicals), or most commonly, by a virus. Five agents are commonly recognized as the cause of acute viral hepatitis (Table 1): hepatitis A virus (HAV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), delta virus or hepatitis D virus (HDV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), and non-A non-B hepatitis.
