The etiology of many cases remains a mystery. The major cause of dilated cardiomyopathy is excessive alcohol consumption. Cardiomyopathy may also be caused by amyloidosis, hemochromatosis, metastatic carcinoma affecting the myocardium, fibrosis secondary to radiation, hypertension, vitamin deficiencies, pregnancy, viral or bacterial infection, and immune disorders. Other risk factors include chemotherapy, myocarditis, infiltrative disorders, and hypersensitivity to penicillin, tetracycline, or sulfonamide drugs.
